We met a Man that lives down the road from us that has a God given talent. He takes wood and carves the most beautiful items I have ever seen. And as if that wasn't enough, he also carves beautiful statues out of stone... had some gorgeous Buffalo's, Indian heads, horses, ect...that he had carved out of stone. It was some of the most beautiful carved stone work I have seen. Does it all from a little shop next to his house. He and his wife attend the local Episcopalian church. But he said he was glad to see someone finally here and using this place because it was a shame to see it all boarded up and not in use. This guy was half Sioux Indian and his wife was a Norweigan. Met another couple from Virginia (they were not Native Americans). They have been here for 8 years with the Assembly of God. Had a church in Fort Yates, but it fizzled out, so now they don't go to any certain place. He preaches when he gets appts. They are the parents of "Becky"...the lady that home-schools her children and married to the Duane Uses Arrow. Talked like they would come to our services some.
Like I said before, every one we meet here has been very polite and some have showed alot of interest. We had a man named Wayne come by that was in a wheel chair....his friend (Chris) was pushing him down the road. I had seen them across the street at Kelly's Bar quite frequently. Wayne said he used to come here and talk to the other preacher that was here years ago. Of course, we invited him to church and he said he would come. Wayne had one leg that was amputated at the knee. Chris did not say much. Pray for Chris and Wayne's salvation. Doyle and I were talking today about the story in the Bible...how the man of God pleaded for the Lord to save the city if he could find one righteous......I told Doyle that's what we need to do...ask God to save just 1 of the men that are drunks and frequent the bar across the street...so that everyone could see the change that God can make in a person when they truly get born again. And when that 1 person gets saved....ask God for another...then another!!!!! ONE at a time......Cannon Ball would be a different place. It make take a year to win that 1st person....but it will be worth every second!!!!
Went out visiting today passing out flyers for our first service along with tracts. We met the man that Pastors a Community church and he told us joke I wanted to share with you....."There are alot of different people that are Christians and going to Heaven...American, Chinese, AFro-Americans, ect...but the Indians that are Christians will enter heaven FIRST...because they have Reservations!!!" Thought that was a good one!!
We met alot of the local people and all of them were very nice. One lady said she and her sons have been going to the Mormon church...but it is so far to drive. Said her boys love Sunday School...asks if we were going to have SS classes. We told her Yes...she said they would probably come. Another man we met said he and his family used to go to church...but the church had some problems so they stopped going. But he said he wants to go to church and talked like he would come to our service. Another guy told us he and his wife went to church until he started questioning what the Preacher was saying and went home to check out it the Bible and saw that the preacher was lying. He never went back and that was 7 years ago. We talked with him awhile and are praying that they will come also. Then we met another man, Eagle Boy, that was really depressed because his wife had left him..at first we thought she had just walked out on him...but then he started talking about how she was in the spirit world and he wanted to go to there to be with her. Doyle talked with him awhile and before we left Doyle ask if he had a Bible..Eagle Boy said no...so we came home and got a Bible and took it back to him. Eagle Boy drinks alot but did ask that we pray for him. Like I said, everyone we met was very nice and polite. The majority of them acted interested in the church, the rest did not say one way or the other.
We got the small sign ready to put on the church above the door....it is drying tonight and tomorrow it will go up!!! Then we will get the larger one ready tomorrow and hopefully put it out tomorrow evening or Monday. So, we've had a busy day. I LOVE getting out and meeting the people. The Lord has given me a love for them. Pray that many will come to know the Lord as their Savior. Bye for now. Sheri
We were talking on the Web-Cam to one of the grandkids this evening and all of the sudden it began raining and the wind was blowing very hard. Doyle got up and looked out the window and the sun was shining!! But over near the back of the yard and over the trailer was a huge cloud. I got the camera and took three beautiful pictures. I loaded them in our Picasa pictures...so take a look!! You will also see why I labeled todays blog..."Our Pillow"!! A special picture was also posted for Liberty, Gabby and Paige...they will understand it. Last night it thundered and rained alot and poor Bella paced from one end of the trailer to the other (she doesn't like loud noises...makes her nervous) barking some and whining alot....she was wore out by bedtime!!!! In her picture she's taking it easy from all that action!!!!
We took a trip to Lowe's today and got an estimate on the cost of building materials it would take to finish the entrance foyer, Doyle's office, the bathrooms, and the rest of the auditorium. Quite a bit...but we know the Lord is able!!! We would like to get most of it done before our first service on October 5th....but the Lord knows and is in control.
Went to the Post Office here in Cannon Ball today and met several local people. The Post Master even let us post a flyer about our first service!! Also met "Boots", the Pastor of the Southern Baptist Church. He was nice and said anytime we have questions about anything to let him know. There was also a lady there that works in the Clinic here on Wednesdays when a Doctor comes to treat those that are registered Tribe members. We had just found out this morning from a Missionary friend that a church in Alabama has a skid of medical supplies (not medications) they will send to us if the clinic here can use them. So we are going to go in the morning and talk with the Doctor at the clinic here in Cannon Ball and see if he would like them. If not, we'll check with the clinic in Selfridge on Friday. The same church also has winter clothing they will send for us to give to those in need.
I read a note today that Bro. Stinnett Ballew had written about Pastor Sammy Allen's health....and I really like how he ends his letter....."A Satisfied Customer of the Lord Jesus Christ".............that we are!!!! Sheri
It's rainy and a little muggy out today. Not humid like in the south...just cloudy and a few showers now and then. The rest of the week is suposed to pretty. Yesterday we went to church in McLaughlin, SD and met the missionaries, Gerald and Louise Pike. They have been in SD on the reservation for 13 years. Counting us, the Pikes (they have 5 children) there were a total of 11 in the AM service. It is very hard here on the Reservation and growth is very slow. Every missionary we have talked to on Reservations have told us this same thing.
Doyle has been busy today helping me get our September prayer letters ready to mail, plus doing some odds and ends on my "honey-do-list". He finally has managed to escape over to the church and is working on the sheet rock..getting it ready to do some painting.
On our way to church Sunday I saw a hill that had a group of trees on one side that were turning fall colors. It was very pretty and reminded me of home. I wish I had taken my camera so I could have posted a picture. The hills were rolling and there were lots of cattle and it reminded me of the song "He Owns the Cattle on A Thousand Hills"!!
Well...the kids are starting to make their daily calls so I better sign off for now........ Sheri
What a blessing Kevin Daves has been to us. If I have a computer problem, even tho he is 1500 miles away...all I have to do is give him a call or send him an email and he's right on top of it!!! The Lord is so good to us.
Yesterday we received a phone call from Bro. Bruce Scott, pastor of a church in Monks Corner, SC. We were there back in the spring while on deputation and presented our burden. I have been sending them our prayer letters and recently sent them a letter of how we were less than $200 away of our needed support. he said the church there had voted to support us at $50 per month!! Praise the Lord. HE is faithful and WILL supply our needs!!!!
We made the hour long trip (one way) to Walmart today. Doyle said he didn't think I could go 2 weeks without visiting Walmart!! I guess when I do get to go I will be so excited that I won't be able to sleep the night before (especially in the winter when the trips will probably only be once a month). It's very different not being able to just "run down the street or across town" when you need something. I have already learned that I HAVE to make a list so I don't forget something.
Well....that's about it for now. Tomorrow we plan on passing out some more flyers about our first service on Oct. 5th. Looking forward to meeting some more people in Cannon Ball. Love and Prayers Sheri
Please bear with us. The site has been experiencing some technical difficulties over the last couple of days. We are taking a look into the problem(s) to see if we can sort them out.
I added some pictures today that we took Sunday...one is of Victory Baptist Mission that we visited in Selfridge...the others are of the scenery between Cannon Ball and Selfridge. Hope you enjoy them. We made a very good visit yesterday evening with Becky Uses Arrow. She is the lady that home schools her children. They plan on being with us for our first service. Went to visit her parents today but they were not home...will go again tomorrow. Got alot done today in the parsonage...but am running out of room to put things!! Doyle put the final coat of paint on the sign so tomorrow we can start on the letters. He also finished the sealant on the roof. Tomorrow he is going to tear out the old carpet on the front porch and see what needs to be done there. Things are slowly shaping up but we still have a long way to go. Praise the Lord for answered prayer-My mother went home today....she is still very weak and tired...please continue to pray for her. My sister from Arizona is still with her but she is going to have go to go home soon. Well....love and prayers...we miss everyone.....but love it here!!! Sheri
Good Morning from Cannon Ball. It is gorgeous outside...sun shining, a little breeze...perfect weather!!! Doyle is going to work a little more on the roof today while I try to finish in the kitchen and maybe the bathroom. This afternoon we may venture into Fort Yates and check out the local grocery store and then this evening make some visits here in Cannon Ball. I am anxious to begin visiting and meet some of the people here. There have been several men stop by and talk with Doyle but I haven't met any women yet. Yesterday a younger man came by and was selling Dreamcatchers. Said he was trying to make money to buy gas to get home. We didn't buy one but did notice as he left that he did not stop at the house across the street or down the road unless he had been there first. Anyway....gotta get busy. I have some other pictures I took Sunday...just scenery pictures...will try to get them loaded this evening. Sheri
Praise the Lord....they took the tubes out of my Mother's head today and if all goes well she will come out of ICU into a room. Then I will be able to call and talk to her. Thanks you so much for all the prayers on her behalf!! Yesterday we visited a church in Selfridge where another Missionary is the Pastor. He and his wife have 4 children. They are a very sweet couple and we were glad to find someone within 50 miles that we will be able to have some fellowship with. Today we went to Mandan and got a Post Office Box. Our mailing address is P.O. Box 381 Mandan, ND 58554-0381. You can mail letters, cards, ect.. to this address. Any larger will need to come UPS to 7037 8th Ave. Cannon Ball, North Dakota 58528. Our home phone number is 701-854-3005. Cell numer is still 706-934-4555. Right now Doyle is over at the church working on his office. I have been working on my kitchen cabinets all afternoon...cleaning them out and putting new contact paper down so I can start unpacking my dishes.
It has been such a blessing to be able to talk with our kids and grandkids via the webcam. Makes it a little easier being away from them. Little Nevada hugs the computer screen!! Thanks again Kevin!!!!
We still have lots of work to do on the church and here at the parsonage. Start praying now for our first service on October 5th!!!
